How to Care for Dry, Weather-Exposed Skin Through a Northern Winter

Cold wind and dry indoor heat are hard on skin. Here is how I care for dry hands and weather-worn skin through a Northern Ontario winter.

North Relief unscented crème for dry, weather-exposed winter skin

Winters here on the North Channel are beautiful and they are also long. Between the wind off the water and the dry heat indoors, my hands take a beating by February. Here is what helps.

Why skin feels so dry in winter

Cold air holds less moisture, and indoor heating dries things out even more. Skin can start to feel tight, rough and uncomfortable, especially on hands, knuckles and anywhere the wind reaches.

Simple things that help

  • Wash with lukewarm water rather than hot.
  • Moisturize while your skin is still a little damp.
  • Keep a rich crème by the sink and use it through the day.
  • Reapply after time outside in the wind and cold.

North Relief is our richest, fully unscented crème.

For weather-worn hands and elbows, North Relief is the one I keep within reach all winter. It is thick and comforting, completely unscented, and a small amount lasts a long time.

How do I help dry, cracked-feeling hands?

Keep a rich crème nearby and reapply through the day, especially after washing your hands. North Relief is unscented and a little goes a long way.

Is North Relief good for sensitive skin?

It is unscented with a short, simple ingredient list, which a lot of people with sensitive skin prefer. Patch test first to be sure it suits you.
